Pope Francis Passes Away at 88: Vatican Begins Process to Elect New Pontiff

VATICAN CITY, April 21, 2025 – His Holiness Pope Francis passed away peacefully this morning at 7:35 am, as officially announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church.
"In the early hours of this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father," said Cardinal Farrell. "His life was a testament to humility, courage, and compassion — especially toward the poor and marginalized. He showed the world how to live the Gospel with unwavering faith."
Pope Francis, aged 88, dedicated his entire life to serving God and the global Catholic community. As the Vatican enters a period of mourning, preparations are now underway for the conclave to elect the next pope.
Further details on the funeral arrangements and the conclave schedule will be released by the Vatican in due course.
