Anushka Shetty on Her Role in Ghaati: “Sheelavathi Will Stay With Me Forever”

Celebrating 20 years in cinema, Anushka Shetty is back with the much-anticipated action-adventure Ghaati, directed by visionary filmmaker Krish Jagarlamudi. Starring Vikram Prabhu in the male lead, the film is produced by Rajeev Reddy and Sai Babu Jagarlamudi under First Frame Entertainment, presented by UV Creations. With a grand release on September 5, Anushka opened up about the film and her experience during a press meet.
Highlights from Anushka’s Interview:
On Playing Sheelavathi:
“Sheelavathi is a unique and powerful character — unlike anything I’ve done before. It pushed me out of my comfort zone.”
Comparing Her Iconic Roles:
“From Arundhati, Rudramadevi, Baahubali, to Bhaagamathie, I’ve always taken up strong roles. Ghaati's Sheelavathi continues that legacy, with a fresh new shade.”
Women’s Strength:
“Every woman has an inner strength that surfaces during tough times. That’s what Sheelavathi represents.”
Reaction to the Script:
“When Krish and writer Srinivas narrated the story, I was intrigued by the culture and the visual experience we could bring to the audience.”
On the Cannabis Element:
“Yes, it’s a socially relevant theme. Though it’s a commercial entertainer, there’s a strong, positive message.”
Reuniting with Krish (Post-Vedam):
“We always wanted to work together again. Ghaati came organically and gave me one of my career’s most memorable characters.”
On Shooting in Remote Locations:
“Fans came to see us even in remote areas along the Andhra-Odisha border. That’s the true power of cinema.”
Working with Vikram Prabhu:
“He’s a true gentleman. I loved his film Kumki — he’s perfect for the role of Deshiraju.”
On Cinematography and Music:
“DOP Manoj’s visuals and Sagar’s music bring a fresh tone. Krish wrote three songs himself — ‘Kundeti Chukka’ is a personal favorite.”
Off-Screen Life:
“I enjoy traveling, reading — currently reading the Mahabharata — and spending time with family.”
Future Roles:
“I’d love to take on an intense negative role. I'm also doing my first Malayalam film and have an exciting Telugu project coming up.”
