Actress Laya on Her Comeback Film Thammudu

Renowned actress Laya is making her much-awaited return to Telugu cinema with Thammudu, slated for a grand theatrical release worldwide on July 4. Produced by Sri Venkateswara Creations and directed by Sriram Venu, the film features Nithiin in the lead, alongside Varsha Bollamma and Sapthami Gowda in key roles.

Laya plays the role of Jhansi Kiranmayi, a strong, disciplined officer and the sister of the protagonist. Speaking about the film, she said, “This role represents a new kind of brother-sister sentiment. It’s powerful yet emotional—a perfect film for my re-entry.”

She shared that she was approached for the role after interviews she gave in India in early 2023. Though initially not shortlisted, a fresh photoshoot changed everything. She committed to the role, even gaining weight to suit the character and staying in India for months to shoot the film.

Laya described the shoot in forest locations as physically demanding but emotionally rewarding, with everyone giving their best despite injuries and challenges. “This wasn’t a picnic shoot. Everyone was dedicated and deeply involved,” she added.

Working with Nithiin was a memorable experience, calling him "mature and natural on screen, yet down-to-earth off screen." She also praised director Sriram Venu for his vision and intensity on set.

Reflecting on her evolution, she noted the stark difference in the industry now—from promotions to audience interactions. “Even when I was a lead actress, I was never seen as a star, just as Meena from Preminchu or Ratnamala from Missamma. That’s why I feel no gap transitioning into strong character roles.”

Laya, who left her job in the U.S. for this opportunity, emphasized her commitment to meaningful roles. “I’m here not as an NRI artist, but as a local artist ready to take on impactful characters—whether sister, mother, or otherwise,” she stated. She is currently working on a film with Shivaji and is open to more projects with substance.
